Jaap van Zweden 鈥塺eturns to Dallas for Shostakovich鈥檚 eloquent Fifth Symphony. Despite its grandeur and optimistic fa莽ade 鈥 huge climaxes, triumphant marches, exhilarating brass and percussion 鈥 a profound sadness cries out in the third movement, the spiritual center of the work. Yet, one critic says, 鈥渟ome shadow of Shostakovich鈥檚 indomitable spirit had seeped, surreptitiously, into the souls of attentive listeners.鈥 Conrad Tao 鈥渇erociously talented鈥 (TimeOut New York) joins our Conductor Laureate and the orchestra for Mozart鈥檚 elegant Piano Concerto No. 23. Opening the concert is Prokofiev鈥檚 charming Haydn-inspired 鈥淐lassical鈥 Symphony.
